Steve Stokes

Steve Stokes

Steve Stokes studied architecture at the Boston Architectural Center in the late sixties and early seventies. He first worked on various regional school projects with Drummey-Rosane-Andersen Architects in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Steve then relocated to New Hampshire, where he joined Clifford Broker Architects where he was involved in commercial projects and the colonial restoration of numerous eighteenth-century town halls. He later joined Douglas Prescott Architect in Laconia, New Hampshire, and continued to specialize in commercial work, becoming involved in hospital and clinic design, as well as banks. Continuing his education, Steve did post-graduate work at Harvard School of Design, in Cambridge, where he studied land planning and residential development.

Shortly after becoming licensed in New Hampshire, he opened his own firm, SKS Architects, where he managed a twelve-person office in Laconia, and continued mostly commercial work and several condo projects in the Lakes Region. During this time, Steve served on the board of, and as president of, the NH Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. He also served two terms on the Laconia City Council and was chairman on various boards and committees for the towns of Gilford and Meredith, and the city of Laconia.

After closing SKS Architects in 1990, Steven worked in Santa Barbara, California, with Murray Duncan Architects, where he was involved in the design of several large homes in the Santa Barbara Spanish colonial style. Returning to his beloved New Hampshire, He continued his newfound love of working on a more intimate level with his clients designing and often building their Lake Houses.

Steve says:

“I find that my clients love the traditional feel of my finished projects; often saying that it ‘feels like Grandma’s house.’ One of the best comments I ever received was when a future client walked onto one of my building sites of a brand-new home and said, ‘That’s a wonderful renovation.’ I pride myself in making homes look like they’ve always been there.”
